Frequently
asked Questions about Dentistry
What is the difference between professional
whitening and over the counter whitening?
Professional bleaching entails making custom bleaching trays, which
leads to a more predictable result by whitening teeth more evenly.
How often should I get my teeth cleaned?
Dental research has shown that patients without gum disease should get their teeth cleaned every 6 months to maintain health. Research has also shown, that patients with gum disease who get their teeth cleaned every three months can prevent disease progression. Also, by routinely getting dental exams problems can be detected earlier and treated less invasively.
Why do I need to get my wisdom teeth removed?
Wisdom teeth that are impacted or embedded
in bone are at risk of developing cysts and other forms of pathology.
These impacted teeth may also create bone loss to second molars
when they are too close. Wisdom teeth that are partially erupted
are at more risk of developing infections because bacteria and food
easily get trapped in the space between
the tooth and the gum.
Why do a root canal as opposed to extracting
a tooth?
Infected teeth can be treated in one of two
ways, either by extraction or a root canal. A root canal involves
removing the infected nerve tissue from the tooth and restoring
that tooth with a crown. When a tooth is missing, teeth near that
space can shift, ultimately affecting the patient's bite and chewing
ability.
What is a perio pocket?
A periodontal pocket represents the space
between the tooth and the gum. Periodontal disease develops when bacteria
invades this space and creates an infection resulting in the loss
of bone and gum tissue.
